Day 36 - 10 Jan.2012 - Rio Grande / Tierra del FuegoWe left Rio Gallegos in the mid morning, said good-bye to Bob and headed to the Chilean border where we arrived at quarter to 11. The border hall was full of people queuing in snakes through the room – “this will take a while”, we thought. There were some papers to be filled out and then the first stop was the Argentinean passport control followed by the Chilean. That done, we had to go to the vehicle paper check for both countries. Again the stamped declaration by the Embassies did help greatly but the fact that the car is registered and owned by the bank and not the rental company always causes some discussion and confusion. After that we had to go to the SAG officer who controls what food and animal products are taken into Chile. The options were to eat everything before entering Chile or hand it over to the officials. Therefore, once we were done with our documentation run, we first had lunch in the car eating whatever was possible and handed the rest over to the officer followed by a car search. After 3 hours at the border we were done and on our way into Chile. After some 120km of gravel road we reached the Argentinean border again. Luckily this control station was less busy and it took us less time to get through it. |
