Day 27 - 01 Jan.2012 - Buenos Aires

Thank you for all your New Year’s wishes!

On the first day of the New Year we had a bit of a lay in. We ordered breakfast to our apartment and had a late start in the day. After that we went for a walk to experience Buenos Aires. We had only managed to see a fraction of it but just enough to fall in love with it. So far it is the most elegant, cosmopolitan and in a way strangely familiar of all the cities we had visited during our trip. You know you are in South America but you think ‘hang on, it feels and looks like Paris’.
In the early afternoon we went back to our apartment to wait for Katherine, a friend of Ania. It was a coincidence that she was near BA on holiday at the same time as us and we invited her to stay with us for a day. We all decided to head to San Telmo, famous for its Sunday antiques market. It took us a wee while to get a taxi but finally we managed to flag one down. Have you ever seen the John West Tuna advert with the guy whose long hair is constantly flapping in the wind to the annoyance of his fisherman colleague standing next to him? Well, that was our taxi driver.
In San Telmo Katherine spotted an Indian restaurant and felt the urge to have some curry. It turned out to be a disaster and we all agreed that was by far the worst curry we have ever had – just rice with tomato sauce.
We had a walk along the market stalls and later made our way home on foot. Back at home we showed each other the photos from our trips and went to sleep way past midnight.

Read the next days of our trip on Leg 4.
