Day 14 - 19 Dec.2011 - Brasília

Today was a rest day in Brasília. We left the car at the garage to have a general check over after all the rally experience from two days ago. As we are left without a car for the rest of the day and it is constantly raining more or less heavily, we decided to stay at home and update the webpage. On the way back from the garage, the taxi driver took us trough the main axis of Brasília giving us a short city tour. However, getting out of the car is impossible in this rain and so we had only a quick glimpse at things through the rainy widows of the taxi. One interesting thing he told us was that plans to build the capital of Brazil inland did exist already since the early 19th century. At that time the thought was to build the capital inland to make it less vulnerable towards foreign attacks. As our taxi driver put it: “You cannot carry your boat on your shoulders and walk with it to Brasilia”. However, in the end Brasília was only built more than one century later by Juscelino Kubitschek, president of Brazil from 1956 to 1961, and became capital of Brazil in 1960, although not completely finished then. After the quick city tour the taxi driver dropped us home and for the rest of the day we stayed inside hiding from the rain
