Day 13 - 18 Dec.2011 - Brasília
Having had a long sleep after our yesterday’s adventure we woke up at around 8:30am and went to have some breakfast or as they call it here ‘café da manhã’. The pousada Beija-Flor is a really nice place. We found it in the national guide book ‘Guia Quatro Rodas’ which we bought in Recife and so far it hasn’t let us down.
The breakfast was served in a lovely hexagonal shaped hut and was laid out on a ‘table’ fixed around the central, wooden pole also supporting the traditionally constructed palm-leaved roof.
Before we checked out from the pousada, Olav drove to the local police station to report that we had lost our front number plate. The police took a note of that and advised we should report it again when we cross the state border of Brasilia.
The V-belt in the car makes a lot of noise just when you start driving and we decided to have the car checked in a garage when we are in Brasilia.
Today we had only 287km from Alto Paraís de Goiás to the capital. Therefore we decided to have a short sightseeing trip after breakfast and drive in the afternoon. We set off to see Vale da Lua, that means ‘Moon Valley’. Indeed the rocky landscape of the valley has a moon-like appearance. The local river shaped the surrounding rocks creating smooth, organic forms, at times reminding the style of the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí. If you know Casa Milá or Casa Batló in Barcelona then you would recognise the resemblance between them. And again it was really hot down there.
Later on in the day the weather had changed dramatically and we experienced some proper tropical downpour. It was raining buckets - literally! Needles to say that the roads turned into small rivers in a matter of minutes. We stopped to get some diesel and later to make a phone call from a phone booth. Suddenly, when Olav was on the phone, a lightning hit the electricity pole very close to where we had parked our car. I was still inside the car and can tell you it shook a great deal. That very moment I must admit my heart skipped a beat. Really powerful stuff!
As we were approaching Brasilia, our TomTom got back on track again.
We will stay in Brasilia with our friends for a couple of days, get things sorted out with the car and hopefully find some time for sightseeing as well. Até mais!
